John and Sara Pilafas took their breakfast, brunch and lunch expertise from Benedict’s Eggs and More in East Dundee and have put it to good use at Benedict’s La Strata in downtown Crystal Lake. Start on a pot of Intelligentsia coffee as you cruise the menu, which includes 10 spins on the eggs benedict, including surf 'n' turf, as well as Italian stratas (layered, baked casseroles) and perfectly executed breakfast items like omelets, frittatas, waffles and pancakes. Other eats range from traditional ham and eggs to cherry-stuffed French toast to colossal sticky buns.

For lunch, 11 sandwiches, plus grilled panini, wraps, salads and homemade soups like mushroom-brie bisque round out the menu. Coffee creations and classic brunch coolers like bloody marys and peach bellinis round out the beverage options. A mere half block from the Raue Center for the Arts, Benedict's should do nicely when it begins dinner service on Thursday through Saturday nights in spring 2008.
