Opera: User Reviews
We've walked past this restaurant several times and always thought it was somewhere interesting to try... after eating there this past weekend, we were VERY disappointed. The only plus was the peach frozen martini, otherwise the food was poorly seasoned. Everything we ordered had WAY too many hot peppers and was overpoweringly spicy, and I love spicy foods!! We ordered the hot-n-sour soup, beef and brocolli, and spicy chicken. I barely touched the soup, and needless to say, we were not too keen on eating the leftovers the next morning!

Opera used to be great, but no longer. The ambiance is the same - colorful, lively. The service was fine, but the food is awful! I have been the this restaurant a few times over the years and always loved it. When I took a group of eight people there after not having been there for a year, ever person thought their food was disgusting. I had a dish with dried out noodles, no sauce, a variety of incompatible veggies, and some questionable tasting shrimp. I was afraid I was going to get sick.

Well it used to be my favorite restaurant, however, I do agree with some of the recently posted reviews. The food quality had gone completely south.. there used to be a time when I used to think their Opera's Field Green Salad was the bomb... tasted it this evening... not sure what they did to it, but it was horrible. How can you mess up a good salad? Peking Duck Service has been taken off the prix fixe menu... why not just keep it and charge extra for it if it really costs them that much. Anyway, stay away from the whitefish and beef/asparagus - we tried them and both were terrible, especially the whitefish was bland and at best average. The desserts were both terrible - some cornbread like concoction for 8 bucks and the worst key lime pie I ever had. The best part of the meal was golden shrimp which I have jad may times before. I wonder how long it will take for them to mess that up. Guess, I won't know, because I am definitely not going back there.

We set a reservation for 8:00, we ordered an appetizer and drinks and got them very quickly, so far so good... then we ordered our food around 8:15, finished our drinks, didn't see the waiter again until 8:40ish, we saw him, but he didn't come by our table, finally came by our table again around 8:50, then asked us where our food was... we asked him the same thing. We finally got our food about an hour after we ordered it. It wasn't amazing by any means... I got the sweet/sour chicken, which was terribly sweet and overspiced with lemons. chicken was tasty, but it was difficult to enjoy a dish that was just too sweet. my girlfriend got the chicken chow fun, and it tasted alright, again, nothing special. I've been there about 3-4 times before and haven't really had any luck. I'm giving up on this establishment, which is ashame, because they could have such potential in the south loop, but keep failing with poor service and mediocre food. i would say try something else.

For four people our bill was $275 (including tip). Even though service was good, and food was better than average, paying $29 for a piece of whitefish in oyster sauce with rice and asparagus is absurd. a 3 inch in diameter crab cake was $14. and four allagash white beers was $36!!!! What the??? I'm getting to the point where i think all of the KDK restaurants are completely overpriced and so not worth it. Save your moola and go to the mom and pop Chinese shop.

Wow, what a rip off. Food was poor, drinks were way overpriced. Service was good, but the place was empty for a reason on a Friday night! I will l not be back under any circumstances. Too many good places to choose from in the area alone to return to Opera.

Opera is one of the most visually engaging restaurants around -- really a feast for the eyes with its mix of style and whimsy! Is it a good value? Well, I’m not so sure about that. On the plus side, the host did her best at seating us in a place that met my special needs. And our server, Naomi, was top-notch. For me, though, the food & wine did not deliver quite the value I’d expect…
The complimentary starters (spiced peanuts, pickled cukes) were OK. Then we had a plate of Sichuan green beans as a starter; they were pleasant, but we could do much better at Phoenix in Chinatown (for example) at a lower price. The entrees were so-so: shrimp in black bean sauce featured fresh, nicely cooked shrimp -- but where were the black beans, and where was the flavor? Ditto chow fun chicken, except that the chicken was a notch down from the shrimp in freshness (but I do love them big, fat noodles!). And don’t even ask about the presentation of the foregoing items -- they were just plopped down. The wine list is comprehensive, flexible and well chosen -- but it seems priced about 20% high. Dessert was the high point: the banana date dessert was flavorful -- and nicely presented. And the cappuccino -- so Chinese -- was quite good.
All in all, we had a nice time, though it really didn’t add up to $125 worth...

Went on a Friday night and the place was empty. My food was served cold and I didn't even send it back because warming it would not have improved this mediocre dish. Panda express is better. Felt bad for the waitress because she could tell we hated the food since we left full plates and she was nice.
Report This ReviewI love this restaurant! It is my favorite in the city. The atmosphere is great for a family, friend, or romantic dinner (get one of the semi-private back rooms). The firecracker chicken is out of this world - if you like spicy, this dish is amazing!!
Report This ReviewIt was my sister's 2nd visit. My 1st. She blamed her 1st experience, which was average on the bad date she was on. She was wrong. We ordered the Lobster spring rolls, which were greasy and had very little lobster. We shared the chicken, wild mushroom served with only white rice as an option. The presentation was colorless and bland. The taste was terrible, no seasoning and then they provide you with extremely salty soy sauce. This place is overpriced and over rated. I don't anticipate going back soon --not recommended.
