Eat the Creamy roll!!

I used a Groupon here, so my money went really far, and I have been back twice!! YUM! The service is friendly and attentive, and the food was GREAT! Some prices are high... like the creamy roll was SO amazing, but it costs $16! Other rolls are normally priced... I would definitely recommend coming here!

Fresh and Creative Sushi
By BZLincolnPark from Lincoln Park, November 29, 2009

I've been going here since the place first opened under different management than now. These new folks have invested in a solid room with a unique private dining area, too. They now have a more creative approach. I now put myself in the hands of the chef who puts together a wonderful, tasty array of about 12 small bites in one segmented plate. I bring my own wine more often than not. Maki very good and I check the board foir special items, too. It's a great restaurant on Lincoln Ave. The down the stairs location is a challange but one worth taking the few extra steps to find again and again.

i have found my favorite sushi restaurant in chicago. Kyoto's amazing food, attentive servers, and welcoming atmosphere made for a perfect dining experience. I suggest sitting at the sushi bar, not only is it interesting to watch the chefs in action, you might also get a free treat from them. the restaurant was busy but not crowded and we were seated immediately. My bottle of wine was immediately iced and later opened and poured by the waiter. the sushi was extremely fresh and the quality was superb. i highly recommend this restaurant to any sushi lover.

BYOB Sushi Heaven

We love this place! Have been here several times, and have stopped going to others. The best sushi service and overall experience,as well as very good value. The fish is always very fresh, no matter what day you choose. The two twin brothers are so friendly and can come up with custom rolls on the spot. The host " Tony" and all the staff are helpful and make you feel truly appreciated. Always happy to bring friends and show them a great place.

Diamond in the Rough

I was pleasantly surprised by the creativity of the food upon my first visit to Kyoto. By far not your ordinary Japanese fair, Kyoto's maki will delight your visual and taste senses. We had the unagi, creamy, snowball and summer dragon rolls. All of which were impressive by the unique pairing of elements (e.g. truffle oil, jalapeno, unagi sauce, etc...). I'll be back to explore the rest the of the menu. If you're a sushi connosieur and a maki lover, you should pay a visit to Kyoto. You won't be disappointed.

I am a big sushi eater and this is my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. I love the fact that it is BYOB. The staff and host are always sooo nice when you are there. I like to sit at the sushi bar because the sushi chefs put on a little show and they sometimes let you taste test. Everytime i go i ask the sushi chefs to make me something special and they always exceed my expectations. I love the fact that they have free parking in the back of the building. Overall i will keep coming back and i am now a loyal customer bc of the service and food.

Absolutely the Freshest Sushi In Town!!
By tazzy from Pilsen, October 16, 2008

Well, they are back, and with flair!!!! Having eaten Sushi for almost 40 years, at Kyotos from its original inception, and previous to Kyotos when Michael (chef) was at another restaurant, I would say that the new Kyotos has out done themselves. The decor has been redone to create a very subtle and comfortable atmosphere. But come on folks, decor is nice, but do we go for what's on the wall or what's on the plate?

The new owners and twin chef/owners, Carlo and Melvyn, have taken sushi to a whole new level of creativity. As I looked at the menu I saw the standards, and don't worry folks they still serve the famous "Classic Dynamite" roll and have even come up with ANOTHER roll, more like a "Twisted Dynamite," created based on the classic but with an added twist of just a little tempura crunch and an added flavor. Either way, you simply cannot go wrong.

When I asked about the menu, we were told that it is a work in progress. Besides the fact that it probably is still the freshest Sushi in town (as in, went to the market that morning and nothing has been frozen), you could order just plain Sashimi and walk out feeling like you just had a dining experience. But, after finishing our meal and speaking with the owners and chefs, I finally realized that the menu will always be a work in progress, between the two chefs, their menu will have no boundaries, and if you have something in mind, go ahead ask for it. I guarantee these guys will be able to create it. But if you create it, you will have to name it. From the just the basics to the infusions of various Sushi mixed with vegetables, avocado, mango (that is correct, mango), topped with different sauces, from the mild to the wild and spicy. And all with presentations that simply knock your socks off.

The restaurant is BYOB, but that was fine by us. We brought in a bottle of Sake, and our hostess/owner graciously heated it up for us as we drank it. And there is parking in the rear.

As far as the price goes, it is moderately priced, especially for what you get! There is no "frill," no "foie gras," and no "ala carting," you to death. I highly recommend trying out this place as soon as possible, because I can guarantee that very soon you will have to wait to be seated, make your reservations in advance, and hope you get on the "A List." Out of 10, I would probably give it a 12. Simply Amazing.

Great Maki rolls!
By sutdog from wicker park, October 1, 2008

I have eaten a lot of sushi in this city over the last 12 years. Kyoto was a breath of fresh air (fish). Very interesting maki roll menu. The chef made a very unique special maki menu. The whole menu was filled with fair prices and good sized rolls... made for an excellent dinner. I would say on a freshness scale, 9.5/10. We had two apps= miso soups, hot edamame, rolls=philly, fiesta, and fireball. All dishes were exceptional and the service was spot on. We will be coming back. Great spot-

Kyoto has the freshest and...
By Chris from Chicago, IL, May 17, 2007

Kyoto has the freshest and finest sushi in the city. I go here once a week. They use real king crab meat in their California rolls. Ask about their oysters on the half shell. It's not on the menu but it should be.
