This green-roofed hut, sandwiched between garages and auto-parts shops on the Milwaukee Avenue strip, attracts a lot of artists. Costa Rica natives Miriam and Gerardo Cerdas opened Irazu in 1990; these days young customers call Miriam "Mom" because she tells them what to eat. Patrons include bikers wearing black Harley T-shirts and handcuffs, hipsters with mp3 players and middle-aged Latino couples. Fried or boiled cassava (a root that tastes sort of like a potato) is a specialty. The fruit shakes can be made with either milk or water.
