Costa Rica natives Miriam and Gerardo Cerdas opened this tiny, green-roofed spot, sandwiched between garages and auto parts shops on Milwaukee Avenue, in 1990. These days young customers call Miriam "Mom" because she tells them what to eat. Patrons range from Bucktown families to mustachioed hipsters to middle-aged Latino couples. Fried or boiled cassava is a specialty, as are the garlicky tostones. The fruit shakes, made with either milk or water, are worth a try, but don't miss the aveno version, a cinnamon-tinged oatmeal treat
