Davis Street Fishmarket: User Reviews
My friend and I enjoyed the ambiance of the bar and restaurant so would go back for drinks and appetizers. The food is a different story. Enjoyed the New England Clam Chowder, but friend order Machequox but Gumbo was brought to table. Gumbo was tasty, but if you want corn chowder then Gumbo is not the same. The portions are ridiculously large. Would prefer smaller portions for several dollars less than portions that could feed two people. Should also have been mentioned by waiter when we replied that 'it was our first time at the restaurant'. Etouffee didn't have enough seasoning and Seafood Cobb was also bland.

I took my parents to Davis Street and was a little nervous. The reviews have not always been good. We went and really enjoyed everything we ate. The ambiance is a little kitschy; casual ambiance for such good seafood. Our service was fine, but not wonderful. I will definitely be going back.

high prices for OK (at the best ok) food. the music is really bad and nothing to write home about. Much better sea food places for the same price...and even less.

We had a show to attend in Evanston so we went to Davis St. tonight since we hadn't been there in a couple of years. The decor is much nicer now but the food is just average. We live in the city and love eating at Glenn's Diner, owned by a former owner of Davis St. One of the entrees was cold and flavorless and the other arrived without the "crab relish topping", when asked the waitress brought it in a separate dish but the relish was ice cold. She said that's the way it's served.

In evanston, and the north shore as a whole, it is hard to find quality seafood, much less a menu with 15 or more species.
long story short:
The food is great, stick with the classics...many of the "daily" specials seem to extend the reach of the restaurant.
firecracker shirmp are to die for
Service: this area seems to be a hit-or-miss. service isnt bad, but for the pricetag, there is a big room for improvment
overall: good quality food, nice patio in the summer, and a generally friendly staff.
plan to spend $25 per person 30-35 with a drink

I'm writing this brief review in hopes of restoring a star value for which it is truly worthy of. My family and I have been going to Davis street for years and the quality of food has maintained. It has evolved somewhat but still shines to its louisiana style cooking. The menu is very straightforward, choose a fish, a preperation of it, and a side, which in all honesty is how fish should be prepared in order to appreciate its delicate flavors. As a chef I appreciate this restaurant and can reccomend it to all.

I agree with most of the reviewers below. The food is average and over-priced. That's not what will keep me away. It's the music. It was astonishingly bad. '70s disco music has no place in a dining establishment, much less a Cajun-themed seafood restaurant. I hope never again to have to listen to James Taylor and Carly Simon singing "Mockingbird."

Not that price should EVER indicate how well service should be.. but the price for this 'remolded' establishment.. I expedted more. We had to return our food and to do that had to chase to the front of the restaurant to get the waiter who was chit chatting with other waitstaff. My husband and I went there a year or so ago and decided to give them another chance since they remodeled.. bad choice.. cold food and bad service will not bring us back even if the manager said he 'would give us a free meal' if we came back.

I was shocked at the degree to which a once-great restaurant has declined. Overpriced, rude insufferable staff, average food. Will NEVER go back.
Report This ReviewMy wife and I had not eaten here in several years. My neighbors eat here once a week and have been raving about this newly designed restaurant. Wow, what a dramatic change and surely needed since our last visit. This place is truly charming and very fun and the food was fantastic. I frequently take clients to eat at Shaw's downtown and Davis Street is probably 30% cheaper than Shaw's. Our entrees came with sides which they do not at Shaw's. Our food from appetizers to dessert was fabulous! We are going to join our neighbors on visiting this place once a week. The Northshore needs more retaurants like Davis Street Fishmarket.
