Tough Choices
By idwo8407 from South Suburbs, August 8, 2009

First off you find yourself in a great little neighborhood, parking is a little bit of an issue but there was a lot across the street and you can park there for $10.00.
The Counter is all about the burger. We went with 8 other people and no one got the same burger. Once you begin your journey into ordering you have a lot of tough choices. From the size of the burger all the way to the ingredients. Its a great place to get creative and try a lot of fun combinations of burger creations. There is also a great selection of beers to enjoy with your burger.
I recommend you try "The Counter".

Missed the Mark
By jimmyv from East Lakeview, Chicago, April 6, 2009

In all fairness, this place was a let-down. I got the Turkey Burger with some kind of salsa, tomatoes, jalapenos and jalapeno jack cheese. My girlfriend got a veggie burger. We shared onion "strings" and sweet potato fries.

My burger was so bland that I needed mustard to give it any kind of flavor, even with the jalapenos and jalapeno jack and salsa. It was also very, very dry. My girlfriend's burger left a bad taste in her mouth, and even made her stomach a little upset. The sauces here are a joke and nothing seems to have any real taste. The service was friendly, however, we were never brought a refill on our water and one of the hosts had his skinny jeans riding just below butt-line. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, except that our table faced the back of the host stand - butts in clear view.

This placed missed the mark by a long shot. I can get a better burger at so many other places, with better service and more taste.

Outstanding!

I am a big fan of the Counter. The management and wait staff are very friendly. The first time in there I ordered a take out and they offered me a free beer while I waited. But, that's only the beginning. The food is excellent as their signature, made-to-order burgers are fresh, hot and flavorful with plenty of topping options. The sides and milkshakes are top notch too. They even have Brooklyn Brown Ale on tap - what's not to love? It's not the cheapest option but is reasonable and one of the best around. Thumbs up, Counter!

Good burger, a little steep for the regular customer
By ChicagoKid83 from West Suburbs, December 10, 2008

I have been to The Counter a handful of times in the last two months, and I have to say that I enjoy the place. The food prices are a little steep, but considering the area, it's expected. I haven't had the same experience with a slow wait staff that a few of the other reviewers have had, and I've been there a couple of times when it is simply packed. I went one night for dinner around 6 and we literally got our burgers in less than five minutes.

For the experience, I would recommend it - their toppings are very fresh and the sweet potato fries are delicious. Just don't expect to leave with two burgers, fries, and drinks for under $30.

Unique & Delicious!

I went to The Counter last night to satisfy a burger craving with a friend. I had the beef burger in a bowl with blue cheese, black olives, tomato and balsamic sauce. It was delicious! The cheese and beef were amazing and the mixed greens and tomato were very fresh. My roomie had a beef burger on a bun with goat cheese, tomato , dijon sauce and lettuce. She loved it but said she'd get the burger in a bowl next time because the bun wasn't that special (the honey wheat bun.) We also had the sweet potato fries/onion strings combo - AMAZING. I couldn't stop eating them.

I'm def. going back. There were at bunch of other combinations that I know would be delicious! Great addition to the hood.

PS - Giving it a 4 instead of 5 only because some of the best toppings are an additional dollar...and the price is already a bit high to begin with.

def. a california concept - food quality and all
By chibadgergal from lincoln park, November 4, 2008

Was very excited to try this concept out. Am a restaurant consultant and have traveled the US to see new places. Cool crisp atmosphere and nice open air for a good day. BUT after a burger in a bowl (cooked way too well) and sharing fries with my girlfriend. Is it worth $18!? NO They need to get that Chicago knows food and this misses the mark. Great idea for concept though.

misstep
By auntie from lincoln park, October 25, 2008

great concept. big misstep. the service is slow. The burger, albeit cooked right, is mediocre at best. nothing exciting about the choices. and they don't even offer BACON at any premium price. who doesn't like bacon on a burger?
Chicago is a picky restaurant town and it should be considering it has two of the best restaurnants in the WORLD. Better step it up.

Noisy burger

So forget it. The hamburger is good, but you need to endure unbrearable noise and the slowest service in Chicago. Not worth the food.

Just okay
By Lauren from LakeView, October 13, 2008

The space is cold and uninviting. The fifty fifty fries (sweet and regular) were the same. Nothing worse then cold fries. Waitstaff nice but green. Burger, am. cheese, pickles, grilled onion's and peppers was good but expensive. Would not go back just so many other places to choose from for a good burger.
They need to warm up the atmosphere and the staff just needs practice. I'll go back in a month or so to see how they are doing.
