Hop Haus: User Reviews
Hop Haus

Always saw this place from the Brown Line but never ate there, then went there for lunch a few weeks ago and just got a burger to go for dinner tonight. I had no idea this place had such awesome burgers or I would have eaten here sooner. The beer list and the actual restaurant are nice too. I did see recently that they were number 14(?) in Chicago Magazine's best burgers...impressive. Both times I had the Haus Burger with the thousand island dressing on the side, and both times cooked perfectly and delicious. Seems like all burgers come with a sauce or dressing so heads up if you like it on the side like me. The waffle fries are great, haven't tried the mac and cheese. The to-go version tonight was in a nice cardboard box, but the juice from the burger did soak the bun a little and it was a little greasy but I guess that's expected. I would recommend this place to anyone and will definitely be back again. Oh also the burgers are around $10 and with fries are big enough to split, so it's a great deal.

Even though our orders were screwed up, they gave us drinks, Wild Turkey 101, on the house! Free parking, outdoor seating with 4 flat screens to watch the games while you're in the garden. The outdoor seating is large & there are games to play while you wait for your food. They have those little bean bags to toss in a wooden board with a hole. It's fun especially while you're waiting with your drinks!
Our orders were wrong but they burgers came with more meat than bun . . . that's a first! Loved the side order of mac & cheese along with the fries. We ordered the mini cheesecakes for dessert. Chocolate, strawberry & blueberry they were quite yummy! They were soooooooooooo cute & delicious! I'm exercising so I can go back to this one in Rogers Park. Easy to get to because it's near the CTA bus (#22) & train (Howard).
I will definitely go back & I'll take tons of friends. I had a good time and the food is excellent. You get a wide variety of choices. I was stunned to see kangaroo, ostrich, buffalo & wild boar . . . and these are just some of the burgers you can choose from besides beef, chicken & lamb! In the end, I needed a large doggie bag because I took home half the burger, salad, mac & cheese and fries not to mention the mini cheesecakes.
Definitely good value for the money & you'll enjoy the ambiance. I haven't been to the one on Franklin as this one is closer to me, but now that I know what's on the menu, at some point, I'll try the one downtown.

I'm sorry, a sports bar is meant to be a comfortable, easy-going place. Hop Haus seems to think it's some bizarre offshoot of the nearby SpyBar. We walked in on a quiet Wednesday to see some open booths and were told there would be a 25-minute wait. What? The other time we went, they started blaring techno 5 minutes after they sat us down, and then proceeded to ignore us for 15 minutes. But hey, they have ostrich burgers, that's fun, right?

A friend recommended the Hop Haus to me and his personal bank account with me has increased ever since I tried it. He loves Belgium beers and suggested the DeKoeningshoeven tripel and said the exotic burgers were good. I've had ostrich burgers several times before and was anticipating trying it again along with kangaroo & buffalo. I ordered the triple mini-burgers of ostrich, kangaroo & buffalo. They were out of buffalo so I tried the wild boar instead. Knowing from past experience that the exotic burgers dry out faster than beef since they have less fat, I ordered my burgers medium rare (knowing that medium would be quiet acceptable to me). The mini-burgers all came a little overdone (medium/medium well). They were still all tasty and after thinking about it, a mini-burger is so small that it has to be tough to cook the outside of it and keep the inside medium rare. So, next time I'll pick one exotic meat and cook the regular size patty medium rare.
The trapist beer was delicious! While the beer list isn't as extensive as other places known for a large selection of beer, the beers on the list are very good! I just wish that in addition to the Miller Lite & Bud daily beer specials that they would add some more of their specialty beers. They have free parking and are 2 blocks from the Brown Line's Chicago stop.
All & all, I had a great time and will be back soon.
Slan,
Searlas

I went to this place once and had a ok experience. I went to this place a second time and will no longer be returning to the Hop Haus. I ordered a burger well done and my friend medium rare. Her burger literally was a lump of meat straight from the deli. It was disgusting. Mine was returned 3 times and still given to me rare on all 3 times!! I will not go in to detail about the insect that I found coming out of my tater wedges for fear of vomiting again. Besides all of this the waitress, after being given the burgers to take back the first time, never returned to our table again. The service on top of the raw food sealed the deal for me. No recommendations will be given on my part.

We left Citizen Bar disappointed and hungry and walked to Hop Haus. I had never been there nor heard any feedback on the restaurant, good or bad. We were starving and stopping there turned out to be the best decision! The place was somewhat empty on a Sunday afternoon, but the food was full of flavor in every bite! There are tons of burgers to choose from ranging from something simple all the way to a wild boar burger! I was pleasantly surprised to see a beer pairing recommendation along with every burger selection...it was definitely a nice addition. Our server was spectacular. She remembered everything and was on top of the extras like water, napkins, sauces...we didn't have to wait long nor remind her for anything. After our bad experience at Citizen Bar it was nice to have great service. I would recommend getting the chicken noodle soup if you're a little hungry and don't want to wait the 12-15 mins for your burger to get cooked. It tasted so good...it actually made you wish you'd be sick! The only down side to this restaurant is that the El basically sits on top of it so you'll definitely hear the trains passing by. Other than that, the service was great, the burgers were exceptional, and I'll be going back.
As an added bonus they are open until 4am every night so this should be your late-night eatery, hands down!!!

After reading several bad reviews of this place I was less than excited when my friends suggested having dinner here. But overall we had a good experience. I am not at all adventurous when it comes to meat so I had a beef burger with brie and grilled onions that was very good. My friends tried the kangaroo, ostrich, and boar and thought it was also very good. They have a sampler on the menu that let's you try 3 small burgers of the wild meat. For appetizers the onion rings and artichoke dip were good. We were there on a weeknight and our waitress was very attentive and the service was quick and thorough. The only issue we had was that below the restaurant there was a party going on at Spy Bar and the dance music was making the floor vibrate. It was pretty annoying but apparently doesn't happen very often at that early of an hour. Overall I thought it was good, not my new favorite place but I won't be worried about going back.

The service here is terrible and the food is definitely not for the health conscious. Even the chopped salad is a heart attack. There are better meals at fast food places and you won't have to seek out a waiter for twenty minutes to get your bill.
