This is the original Country House (there are others in Lisle and Geneva), known for its meaty, half-pound, ground-sirloin burgers. The 1999 Chicago's Choice Dining Poll winner for favorite place for burgers, Country House also serves buffalo and ostrich burgers. Opened in 1975, the restaurant also has another claim to fame: It may be haunted. Its current owners bought the building in 1974, and since then, some customers and employees have reported hearing unexplained noises and seeing apparitions of an unidentified young blond woman. Rather than unsettling, management and customers say that the presence is intriguing and even humorous, rather than unsettling. "People walk up and say they heard their name called by a woman's voice, when we haven't called a name in 10 minutes," waitress Cecilia Scharfe says.
