Look for standard coffees plus specialty brews, including Vienna ice cream coffee (vanilla ice cream with espresso and whipped cream), and plenty of house-made pastries, cakes and strudels at this second Chicago location from Viennese coffee giant Julius Meinl (pronounced MY'nl). The coffee, tea (more than 20 loose leaf varieties), chocolate and preserves are imported directly from the Meinl plant in Vienna. The pastry case displays daily selections (breakfast fare in the mornings and desserts later in the day), or you can order such made-to-order treats as mohrim hemd, a hot, molten-center cake with warm chocolate sauce. If you need a meal before coffee and dessert, Meinl also serves up a variety of fancy soups, salads and sandwiches as well as casual European fare. Though the menu changes periodically, look for specialties like roasted lamb and spatzle and Austrian goulash.
