Welcome to Oak Park

I am so happy to have the Bleeding Heart Bakery in Oak Park. While it was worth the drive to Belmont and Damen, it's so much better to be able to walk to the new location. Their vegan bakery items are delicious and so creative. Tigerwoman was right about one thing -- there are many bakeries in Oak Park, but none of them offer vegetarian or vegan items. Perhaps her palate has been destroyed by all that animal fat! I give Bleeding Heart Bakery the highest rating.

WHAT THE . . . . . FLAVOR ? ? ! !

I went to opening day at the Oak Park location. I bought two items. Pumpkin Scone - there was not a hint of flavor to suggest that this was a pumpkin scone, if I had taken a bite with my eyes closed I would not have been able to tell you what it was. Also, Chocolate cheesecake bar. Excuse me, again no flavor. I didn't taste a hint of chocolate, just BLAND & BLAH GOO, I literally could not eat it. I've never not been able to eat chocolate, no matter how bad it was. THIS WAS A FIRST FOR ME. And the last time I'll be going to Bleeding Heart Bakery. My forecast . . They will bleed to death in Oak Park. Too many good bakeries around the same area. Mark my word ! ! ! !

outta your mind

I don't see how this place ever gets a bad review. I think that's what happens when people who have never worked in a kitchen and eat crappy food think they are foodies. Anyway, the product these guys turn out is amazing in flavor and in style. The fact is that if you want to eat organic/natural you have to pay for it. Fortunately, Bakeries like this one are actively trying to make healthy eating accessible to everyone. Above all, its rare to find an independent business that is ethical (charity cupcakes every month! Who the hell does that?) and turns out top quality baked goods. I love their Veruca Salt cupcake and their vegan chocolate chip cookies. If you had a bad experience with their product, I suggest you go back and give them another chance, because there is a reason they have hundreds of regulars...

seriously, what the deuce?

I don't get it. How can a place with such consistently good reviews have such a bad product? The cupcakes were dry and had waay too much frosting, the cinnamon roll was stale and tasteless, and the "tea cakes" were doughy and undercooked. Apparently "tea cake" means "bad muffin for $3.75" in vegan. Plates and proper espresso/cappuccino cups must not be organic, since our pastries all came in cereal bowls and the double espresso came in a giant coffee mug.

You've got a great attitude kid, I'll give you that much. But its just not going to work out between us.

So So Awesome!

Bleeding Heart has really come around. I used to go when it was on Chicago Ave and really, just because it was close to my job. I just recently moved to Roscoe Village and decided to give it another chance. Now, I can't leave! Last week they started making vegan cinnamon rolls and they are so great. I've heard of people getting dry cupcakes, but I picked up a dozen today and no one in my house had any complaints, quite the opposite, they were devoured!

Worst Bakery Ever!
By moe from chicago, October 28, 2008

So I've given this place 3 chances. THe first time we found the brownies dry and expensive. THe second time the muffins were mediocore. And our third and last time was the absolute worst. We tried 4 cupcakes(mojito, chocolate, choco-banana, and carrot) which all had tasted a week old. I am talking hard, dry, and flavorless. On the plus side the frosting was ok. I'd take some hostess or dolly madison any day of the week.

I Miss You Bleeding Heart

Oh, why did you move to Belmont and Damen? I loved going to you every morning. But I have to admit, you're all grown up now and you sure are the best you ever have been! I was so excited to see all the new flavors for the fall season. Thank you for being great! But maybe think about moving back, or opening a really small location around the Ukie V?

the only one of it's kind in Chicago

There is no organic bakery as well-run or consistently delicious as BH in Chicago. I suggest that you try the S'mores tart and brownie. It's good, and they use evaporated cane juice :)
