I also went to to the Brauhaus this past weekend and I was treated with disrespect by the man host and the woman hostess. They didn't seem to want to be bothered with typical restaurant issues. They were very rude and did not make our party welcome or want to stay in their establishment. The food was good but service was horrible. I would not recommend it to any out of towners or friends. Plenty of other German restaurants in Chicago that are better in service and food.

Ever year during Oktoberfest we make a reservation at the Chicago Brauhaus for a large group of people. We all live in Lincoln Park area and take the time to go all the way to Lincoln Square to celebrate in true Oktoberfest tradition. We usually have the time of our lives by drinking the German Beer out of the Steins and Das Boot! This year was a huge difference. This year my friend made a reservation back in August for a group of us to dine here this past weekend. My friend also lost her grandfather last Tuesday so did not have the time to confirm with everyone attending so we all showed up at 7pm for our reservation. We went from a reservation of 16ppl to 8ppl. When my friend checked in at the front and told the man our final number he blew up at her. Stating that she did not have the time and consideration to call him and tell him we would not need a table for 16 people anymore. For punishment, the man at the front desk told us that we had to sit at a table that was in the corner and was not in the main dining room near all of the main activities. This is also where all of the people who didn't make a reservation stand on top of you and wait for a table. We told him there was a death in our friends family and he was rambling off telling us that we needed to call him. I am a restaurant manager as well and I would have been fired on the spot if I treated my customers this way. This man was so rude and inconsiderate that we left and we will never return. There is another German restaurant right down the street called Glunz Bavarian House. They took a walk in party of 8ppl and sat us right next to the band and we had a fabulous OKtoberfest! Go to the Glunz Bavarian House!!!!!!!!! 4128 N. Lincoln Ave.

I love going to the Brauhaus. Whenever I am there, i always have a great time. The atmosphere is cosy, warm and authentic. I feel like i am in a different place. I always order the schwein schnitzel with apple sauce. It is so tasty. Overall this is a great place with great food and ambiance.

If you want to go to an old line German restaurant in Chicago, this is it. The clientele tends to be middle age and leans a little towards a tourist place to visit. The food is good and prepared well. The portions are not huge but are respectable. The Munich pretzel is massive, good and served warm and soft. I rate the food as good. The men's washroom is huge, clean, and comfortable. The prices match other places in the Lincoln Square area.

Despite the numerous good reviews, I was truly disappointed. Maybe people really enjoy the bar, or the music. But the food is poor.
When I received my headcheese, it was served on a flat, poor piece of iceberg lettuce, the same poor lettuce used in my wife's side salad. The headcheese was topped with a few obviously not-fresh onions. The "vegetable of the day" was CANNED green beans: disgusting.
The rest of the food (schnitzel, sausage, sauerkraut, etc.) were medicore, at best, but nothing to write home about, much less take home (and we certainly didn't take any home). The German fried potatoes might as well have been chunky hash browns from a local breakfast place.
Mostly, it was an extreme disappointment for the price. Had I paid half the price for this food, I might have felt differently about my experience (in a dimly lit restaurant that hasn't updated even modest furnishings). I didn't pay for a $20 entree to come with nearly white piece of lettuce and canned beans.

A regular of many years. We love this place, an inter-generational family business, for its successful capture of a mood - wistful memory of a '50's supper club experience, always perched on the festive.
Loaded with regulars, from young families to wizened couples stretching into their '90's. Beer selection is textbook German, and much of the food is really good - always, the liver dumpling soup, though anything requiring slow cooking seems to have been forgotten (the "roast" duck seems fried, to me, and on two occasions, I've tried shanks, requiring a braise - the pork shank also seemed fried, and it was the hardest thing I've ever tried to chew. But the braten is very good, and despite the (possible) method, I do enjoy the duck. Rouladen, schnitzel, and many different sausages are also good, as expected, as well as the standard sides (spaetzle, roast potatoes, potato salad, red cabbage, etc.).
DO NOT be dissuaded, though, if I'm less than effusive about some (and only some) of the food execution. Stay away from foods normally braised, choose from among schnitzel, sausages, braten, etc., sit back with a half liter (or more), and go dancing to the traditional music of the longtime duo of musicians who've been there as long as we've been coming. Or, just soak - tired of modernity, this is a nostalgiac's paradise.

Had a great time, right around Christmas... while stopping by in the neighborhood for my wife to do some shopping. Sat at the little bar, then moved over to a table for lunch. Food was Excellent, Service was just fine, bought 2 of the Huge munich Pretzels that they had for sale... tasted just like we remember form Munich. A+, fun little place to stop.

Great food, expected atmosphere and unexpectedly good service.
I wish there was another location in Detroit or somewhere of like quality for good German food.
Definitely a great place for a big group of people... You can't go there and say you had a bad experience--- quite a novel place - I will definitely be back (and ordering a boot of beer!)
