Berghoff: User Reviews
This is not a German restaurant. Mashed potatoes with sauerbraten? Get real. My dinner was cold and I sent it back. It came back with a potato lump the size of a golf ball. Now I 'm sickened. German food is about quantity and quality. You won't find it here.

I went to the Berghoff with low expectations having read the reviews online; but, its seems that my low expectations were still too high. the food was dried up and had little taste, correction make that no taste. it was like a bad tv dinner that had been cooked for to long and then served cold .The Berghoff may have been great once but certainly not now.

Last Friday night I went to the Berghoff with a group of friends and found that the place that I had so loved is long gone. Now I'm not making judgements on lunch (I haven't done lunch there in a year and it was good at the time) but dinner was HORRIBLE!!! To start with the dishes are overpriced, I have no problem spending $16-18 on an entree if its good, hell I'll spend more if thats the case but when its bad...its really upsetting. I ordered a pasta dish (butternut squash) of which I was able to eat one piece of the pasta, it was really bad, over-spiced, undercooked, and smothered in cheap butter (I'm not even sure if it was real butter). This place is dead. If you like their beer, go for that but don't waste your money on the food. Oh and the rest of the dishes were overcooked! While our waiter was nice, service can never make up for food this bad.

Went to the cafe in the basement for lunch. I got a HUGE salad and was in and out in less than 30 minutes. Good in my book.

My wife and I read the past reviews and thought it could not be that bad - well, it was. The service was slow and the food left a lot to be desired. I had the beef madalions and I had to order extra bread to even come close to having enough to eat. My wife had the sauerbraghen and it was luke warm - we did not send it back to be heated because it took an hour to get our food - we wanted to eat and run. The peoplesitting on eitherside of us were also disappointed in the quality and quantity of the food - I did learn one thing - believe the reviews you see on Metromix

My friends and I went to dinner here last night, and it was horrible. At first there were only 5 of us, and during this time our waitress was attentive and nice, constantly checking on us. The place was not crowded at all. We ordered 2 appetizers, which were ok but very small portions and seriously overpriced. When our sixth person came, it was near impossible to get our waitress to even come over to our table to take our order let alone refill drinks. The menu states 18% tip is included with parties of 6 or more. The waitress forgot our orders several times and had to come back to check what they were instead of writing them down, brought the wrong food completely after all that, and when the check came, she was very rude and impatient. She even gave us an attitude when we asked for our change when we gave $15 over what the bill was (which already had the undeserved 18% tip on it.) The food was not good at all. The sausage trio was poorly cooked and was supposed to come with potatoes, which was one very small potato cut in half in the middle of the plate. The fish was soaked in butter so much that it was inedible. There was more butter on the plate than fish.
Don't go to this restaurant unless you want to pay way too much for horrible food and horrible service.

The food is given in very small portions and is not that good. I ordered the Beef Medallion and it was not cooked like requested and the potatoes were pastey. This dish is severed with some sort of vegetagle that were very bland and not seasoned. We also
ordered the stuffed mushroom that were also lukewarm and the portion was very small. There was four mushrooms and the price was way too much for this appetizer.
The service was poor. We were never asked if our meal was okay or if we would like refills on beverages. The waitress brought our check without asking if wanted to order anything additional (dessert, etc). For the price and quality of the food, I would not recommend this restaurant for dinner. Possibly the lunch is better.

I went to the Berghoff restaurant tonight, 17 West and was quite disappointed. First I made the reservation months ago and was placed right as people wait to come in. I asked to be moved and I was told thats all thats available in a very cold manner. I was raised eating viener schnitzel , spinnach, rosens rye bread, german potatoes. What a disappointment. The veal was tough, the rye and potatoes are gone. The spinach has some new hot tasting ingreadiant in it. Can anyone tell me where to find a good German Restaurant? Its hard since the Berghoff was so good. I guess thats an era thats gone.

It's not the Berghoff anymore, but it's not a good restaurant either. The bar is ruined (shrimp and scallop strudel? At the Berghoff? You've got to be kidding) The old barmen were pros. The old atmosphere was pure Chicago. The old world convention of standing at the bar with a sandwich was perfect. We used to go there once a week, but haven't been in months. I stopped by last week, just because I was walking by, simply because of nostalgia. Now I remember why some memories are left as just that; now even my fond recollections of the bar are tainted. Goodbye Berghoff, I do miss you.

This was our 2nd visit to the Berghoff within 2 months. Greeted by our host who was not considerate of a request to sit at one of several empty tables other then the one she assigned right at the kitchen entrance. Thank goodness for our waitress who promptly corrected the situation and was very attentive to us all evening. The flight of beer sampler was great but a small piece of sausage to be served with it never came. Our dinner and the rest of the evening were very enjoyable. The house lager is the best tap beer you will ever have Not the same Berghoff of years past, but am glad we can still visit. Will still return for the waitress and the beer in spite of other minor flaws.
