This Asian- and sushi-focused Loop restaurant, which originally launched as a globally inspired contemporary American spot, underwent a transformation in early 2009 after chef/co-owner Kevin Shikami got married and left town, leaving his partner (and brother) Alan Shikami to run the show. Alan set out to make the place cozier and easier on the wallet, revamping the dining room and hiring chef James Okuno to execute a menu of market-inspired Asian fare with dinner entrees topping out at $21. The most affordable include noodle soups such as ramen, pho and a spicy Korean soup (zucchini, onions, tofu, scallions, shitakes, daikon, chili and noodles), as well as a lineup of sizzling plates: tofu, salmon, chicken or steak prepared with your choice of Asian sauces, served on a hot platter with stir-fried veggies and mashed potatoes. The Loop location and lineup of entree-sized Asian salads make Shikago a convenient spot for lunch.
