Joy Yee Noodle Plus

Neighborhood: Near South Side

Chicago, IL 60615

Price range: $ (Under $9)

The folks behind Joy Yee, the perpetually packed pan-Asian restaurant with locations in Chinatown, University Village, Naperville and Evanston, operate this Chinatown spot. Located just a few doors down from the Chinatown Square Joy Yee outpost, the casual spot is slightly different than the others, with a focus on Japanese and Vietnamese eats. Expect choices such as sushi, yakitori, teriyaki and a mix of Japanese (udon, soba, ramen) and Vietnamese (pho) noodle soups instead of the usual noodle- and rice-heavy Joy Yee lineup. Bubble teas, frozen yogurt and Taiwan-style shaved ice (which comes in huge tubs big enough to share, with a choice of multiple toppings) are on offer too. The small dining room is more modern than many of its Chinatown neighbors, with sleek black communal tables, shimmering mosaic tiles on the walls and a glass-topped koi river (filled with live koi) running underneath the floor.
