Cheap ingredients

This is a great place if you just want to sit and have a drink. The decor is pretty cool and the service is about as good as you can get in Hyde Park, which really isn't saying much. I really don't know what their goal is here though. If you want chicken, you can only get dark meat, and there's other things that just make it feel like they want to have a fancy menu, but the ingredients feel cheap. The menu prices really aren't that bad.

They have some really neat mixed drinks, and a small bar. If you just want to hang out with the decor and have drinks in a place you can talk, it's great. You can sit and have an appetizer. I wouldn't ever go back for dinner. It's too bad, the place seemed to have so much potential to be a nice restaurant, don't be fooled by the decor, it's really just cheap eats. If you're into a place where you can get a place of food for $10, this could be your place, though.

Not that great

I heard about Chant from Check Please! , so I was excited to check it out. Boy, was I disappointed. The service was just average, the food was certainly nothing to write home about. I had the Honey Chiptole Wings and the favor was nice, but the chicken wasn't tender. My mom and sister had the Lobster Ragoon and Chicken Satay which they said was ok. The only dish that was half way decent was the Shrimp Fried Rice. It wasn't as flavorful I would have liked, but it was probably the best dish at the table. If I go again it will strictly be for drinks and the entertainment.

Not very good

I was really hoping for a nice restaurant in Hyde Park, unfortunately this was not it. The only good thing was the decor. The service was extremely slow. I could have gotten past this if the food we received was even decent! They only use low grade, dark meat chicken for the chicken dishes, it was gross. My friend ordered the $17 crab dish which was about 1/32 of a pound of crab mixed with pasta, margarine, and peas! Again GROSS! Give me a break, I know Hyde Park is lacking in nice restaurants, but don't insult us with this low grade, rip you off, food. I will never be back!

The decor at Chant is pretty cool, but I was more concerned about he food when I went with a colleague for lunch. I found my curry dish to be excellent, so I'll be back! It wasn't very crowded for lunch, so the service was fast & friendly.

Noisy, poor service, average food

What a disappointment! I went to Chant for a late dinner following a concert (got there about 8:45 p.m.) and the first thing I noticed when I entered was the noise level, appallingly loud. Don't go there with friends, because you won't be able to carry on a conversation! There were no tables available, so I was seated at a small, bar-like area with high stools, which was rather uncomfortable (and, as it turned out, the small space made it difficult to maneuver the dishes, flatware and glases). I was not given a menu. After several minutes, a server came up with a chipper, "how are you?" She seemed rather startled when I pointed out that I had no menu, and went off to find one.

I ordered the curried chicken, which was merely passable. (The old Noodles, Etc. curries were much better!) When the bill came, I put down my cash and had another lengthy wait for the server to pick it up and bring me the change.

I don't know if it was because I was a single woman dining alone, but it was NOT a pleasant experience. I won't go back.

A Nicer Restaurant in Hyde Park...
By binderland from Hyde Park, March 10, 2008

I just visited Chant for the first time last night. My friend and I went around 6PM on a Sunday, and it was a great experience. Not too busy, no wait, music playing but not too loud, and all of the staff were great there. The food is a little more expensive than most of it's neighboring restaurants, but we were both impressed with our dishes: the Tandori? Chicken and the 5 Spice Duck...

Some things we weren't pleased with: small menu selection, butter knives served with meat, and really nicely decorated bathrooms, but only single stall...

I'll have to go back to check out the late-night scene...

Hyde Park need this!

This restaurant is absolutely amazing. From the ambiance to the service, there is nothing to complain about. The crowd is mixed with students, locals from the neighborhood, families and couple, but for us loners you feel easy here as well. Bring a good book, order a cocktail and an appetizer or two and begin to Breathe.
