Forget the Obama nonsense. Forget the age and history of the place. Those things have no bearing on whether, at this moment, Valois is a solid joint. But it -is- a good restaurant, especially when contrasted with the other options in Hyde Park.
You walk into this place and immediately are faced with a massive sign on the opposing wall. You grab a tray and place it on the counter while a cook looks at you--often impatiently--and awaits your order. You should have an idea of what you want, because a quick flash of annoyance darts your way if you hold up the line during busy times.
Once you order, though, it's right down to business. Food is finished fast. And your wallet will thank you, too, since this place is dirt-cheap (example: massive omelet with everything + hash browns for less than $6). The food itself isn't too shabby either. Their breakfast food is particularly good, though even a few breakfast items could be improved (e.g., the dry pancakes).
The seating can be packed during peak hours, but I've always been able to find a chair anyway. Their arrangement is a little crowded probably due to the place's popularity. Valois has a distinct vibe; it attracts a lot of neighborhood regulars, who loudly discuss a wide variety of topics--but always in good cheer.
Aside from the slightly dingy bathrooms, they keep the place really clean. I've never seen a speck of food on my table, and the floor staff whisks away dirty dishes as soon as an individual departs.
All in all, this place is a machine firing on all its cylinders. I docked a star simply because the food quality is -not- perfect and because the rushed atmosphere can come across a little rough to those with a sensitive demeanor. Still, I try to have breakfast here at least once a month.

VALOIS HAS THE BEST BREAKFAST FOOD EVER!!!!!! I also like there lunch and dinner. I highly recommend this place to everyone who lives in the area and for those who don't. I am actually on my way up there right now!!
Report This ReviewI went here for an early breakfast with two 11 year olds-they had trouble ordering, but the staff was fantastic in helping the boys out. The food was great-biscuts-more like light cornbread-were good-different from what I expected. The portions were generous and was served hot. Will go back again!
Report This ReviewValois is GREAT!! Iam very surprised that Iam the only person that has written anything about Valois. They have great food!! I had breakfast there with my mom and sister. We had mushroom cheese and onion omelets, hash browns, sausage, toast, pancakes and juice for under $23.00. It was delicious and more than enough food. They also have good dinners. It's in Hyde Park and has been there for about 80 years. It's a good deal that all the Hyde Parker know about. Take advantage.
