We've been going to Flo for years for brunch, lunch and now for dinner. We love the food, the variety and the ambience of the place. We never are disappointed. Overall this is an very good place to get good food, good service, and good value for your money.

Most expensive tacos I've ever eaten
By laura from Rogers Park, April 13, 2009

Flo has pretty good ambiance but is way overpriced. The food was average, but I could definitely eat better and cheaper in a taqueria anywhere else in the city. I'm not sure what was New Mexican about it. There was no thought to the presentation of the food. It seemed like chips and guacamole were literally just tossed onto a plate from which the chips slid all over the place.
Also, as a diner with gluten and lactose allergies, I found Flo very unwillingly to accommodate my allergies. Because the waiter refused to substitute corn tortillas for wheat tortillas with the fajitas and he refused to ask for the enchiladas without cheese, I ended up with the veggie tacos which I could have prepared myself for a grand total of $4 at home.
All in all, I found Flo to be pretentious and underwhelming. Go somewhere for better food and more options.

Great brunch; mediocre dinner
By mmarine3 from streeterville, February 6, 2009

Overall rating:

I have been here countless times for brunch. It's consistently fantastic with regard to the food. Tonight I had my second dinner experience here, and it's a completely different restaurant. The food has been greasy, flavorless and just...a little worse than mediocre both times for dinner. Everyone is always nice, however!

For people who don't know good food
By jen s. from avondale, November 5, 2008

Our particular server was terrible. We were there at 6pm and our server had only 2 tables, and yet another waitress was attentive enough to notice our drinks needed refilled. Our food was terrible. Perhaps i'm too snooty, but i think using Minute Rice in ANY restaurant is unforgiveable- how hard is it to make rice, especially when it is a major component of your cuisine style? The flavor of the black beans was as if they just opened up a can- they weren't drained of their can water (or if they were actually made, then their cooking water). Watery isn't how you serve black beans-period. The enchiladas and tacos are served with colby cheese, which is very Illinois --not very New Mexico. I asked for a piece of bread or a tortilla to have with my beans and the server informed me it is $.25 per tortilla or $1 for a dinner roll. Are you serious? And we could have gone next door to Habana Libre which is great- totally disappointed and will never go back.

Best Brunch in Chicago
By NP01 from Streeterville, November 1, 2008

Overall rating:

I love this place for brunch. The wait for tables on weekend mornings is usually reasonable--plus they have free coffee while you wait. The staff is unpretentious and the interior of the restaurant is warm and festive. The best part is the food, which is flavorful and authentic. Best Huevos Rancheros in town!

Wonderful!

Service was excellent. The guacamole was fresh and good. The pork stew and the skirt steak were fantastic. And big, tasty desserts from a local bakery (used to be next door) for only $5! Great food, great value and great service.

Creative, cozy & cordial...
By Patrick from Oak Park, July 23, 2008

We enjoyed a very nice pre-theater dinner at Flo on this Tuesday evening. As has been the case on prior visits, the variety and quality of menu items was impressive, as was the compact, fairly-priced wine list. And I learned that Tuesday night’s drink specials included $3 Stella Artois--hooray! We were disappointed to note that the chips & salsa that we remembered from before were conspicuously absent tonight. Cost-cutting, maybe? Whatever. We loved a grilled calamari appetizer served with salsa fresca. For entrees, a Flo Bowl featuring chicken, chorizo, shrimp and a variety of veggies was perfectly spicy *and* flavorful; a Brazilian steak was perfectly cooked and quite tasty (though plated with absolutely no flair). Key lime pie was delicious, as was the Intelligentsia cappuccino. Our server, Zandra, excelled; she was covering all the tables tonight, but still checked in with us periodically and remained cordial and responsive.

I thought airlines are the only ones charging extra for food?
By coffeeking from wicker park, July 8, 2008

I have been to this place numerous times and generally find it desirable, however, two points of contention here....1. the old woman, hmmm, perhaps flo herself? is the grumpiest, unfriendly person with the personality of a lump of potato 2. the last time we ate here i asked for extra poblano sauce for my eggs flo and i was ASTONISHED when the bill came and i was charged $ 3.00 for the sauce. who charges extra for sauce? especially since there wasn't enough put on the eggs to begin with. i will have to think twice about returning to this place next time!!

Come dinner time, Flo appear...
By MPD from Chicago, IL, August 22, 2007

Overall rating:
3

Come dinner time, Flo appear to be suffering from an identity crisis over the past 3 years as it has continuously changed not only the signature portion of the dinner menu but the cuisine (the current kick is Brazilian). Unfortunately, the results have been uninspiring when compared to it's "original" offerings. Flo appears to hedge its evolution by indicating (in a balloon on the menu) that customers may inquire whether their old favorites that are no longer on the menu might be available on order. This only serves to make long-time patrons yearn for the good old days (menu).
