When we visited this Algerian restaurant on a Monday night at around 9pm, I was a little worried that there was nobody around. The place did fill up a little more later, and the kitchen was doing a roaring trade in catering, so I needn't have worried! This is a no-frills store front place as far as decor goes, but spotlessly clean, and the food is fresh, flavorful and excellent value. We had the mussels and baba ganoush as appetizers, and both ordered the Couscous Royale for entrees- delicious freshly-steamed couscous topped with lamb chops, merguez, chicken, beef and root vegetables, with a broth on the side. I was momentarily disappointed that there was no harissa, but the meat was so flavorful on its own, that I just settled in to enjoy the food. The waiter was friendly, and we chatted about the Algerian musicians on the TV screen in the corner.
This place is certainly unpretentious, but they know what they are doing, and if you want to eat some of the best couscous in Chicago, this is your place.
