Night out with Sleep Out
5:56 p.m. We start at a West Side building where Sleep Out and several other bands practice. No visible bars, restaurants or residences in any direction. Enter practice room shared by Driftless Pony Club, which guitarist Sam Grant and bassist/keyboardist Nate Bartley also play in. Goose Island Honkers bottles and Miller High Life cans strewn about. Cigarette butts on floor. Myriad concert posters and eclectic designs—some designed by Bartley—on walls, including an eye-catching turtle w/purple shell and its brain in a fishbowl (designed by Matt Fast of Mt. St. Helens, the other band drummer Ben Geier and singer Quinn Goodwillie play in). On the inside of door a note reads, "Per our written agreement, windows must be closed when rehearsing. Thank you."
