Prince, a.k.a. Camille

Prince has assumed a number of different pseudonyms in his career—including, most famously, an unpronounceable symbol—but full alter egos have been less frequent for the funky Minnesotan. Still, he did attempt an interesting persona in the late ‘80s: Camille, a sexed up, sexually ambiguous singer he embodied by manipulating the recordings to make his voice sound higher. Many of Prince’s tracks as Camille remain unreleased, but the alter ego’s appearances on his “Sign o’ the Times” LP remain memorable, especially on the gender- and sexuality-bending track, “If I Was Your Girlfriend.”
