Hollows
Self-titled
(Addenda)
The sort of band you hope to be playing when Scooby-Doo and the gang burst into a haunted rock club, Hollows are a mostly-girl group (with a dude drummer) that turn ‘60s sounds into a vicious blend of soft harmonies and wheezing organ. “Shadows in the Dark” would be even better if you’re being chased while listening to it, while the driving “Skeleton Woman” generates such forward momentum that by its end you fear Hollows won’t be able to stop. “Happy to Listen” is brighter, nicer, while still laced with melancholy, and “Mary Goes to Law School” locks sweetness and venom in the garage and dares them to go at it. (“Do the Scarecrow” could inspire a dance that’s only done at high school dances after midnight.) If pop could pull you out of a jukebox instead of the other way around, it would probably hang out with Hollows.
