The Prairie Cartel
“Where Did All My People Go”
(Burnside and Ioda)
Want to host a dance party? You've got one if you invite over some outgoing hip-shakers and put on the best of the full-length debut from the local, dance-rock DJ trio of Scott Lucas (of Local H), Blake Smith and Mike Willison. Leadoff track “Keep Everybody Warm” is like a citywide alarm calling you to a dark warehouse to shake it. That leads to “Suitcase Pimp” a dirty freakout that bounces grimy guitar, throbbing beats and distant screeches off each other until your body can barely stand it. Frequently the electro-rock frenzy doesn’t maintain its excitement: “Homicide” struggles to maintain its groove during an irritating vocal refrain, and “Lost All Track of Time” is the sort of mellow meanderer that makes you want to calm down and get a drink. (The atmospheric “Magnetic South” also fails to engage.) Yet scattered throughout the inconsistent disc are nuggets like “Ten Feet of Snow,” which is like the tune you put on just before going out to get you amped up, or what you hope to hear as soon as you hit the floor. Warning: If you’re looking to attract attention to yourself on the CTA, just put this on and wait for your feet to react.
