The Summer Set
“Love Like This”
(Razor and Tie)
Yeah, I’ve got a soft spot for pop-punk. As long as the hooks are big enough and the lyrics don’t sound like a 12-year-old’s diary, with the right formula the genre can just sound like summer. Cue The Summer Set, a deeply catchy Arizona quintet familiar with powerful crushes and sexual revenge. Their debut full-length “Love Like This” is packed with energetic fun, from the sing-along bliss of “Chelsea” to “Girls Freak Me Out,” which opens like Sum 41 but transforms into a party-starting reincarnation of SR-71. Of course there are a few songs (like “Can You Find Me?”) that are way too sweet, but that’s to be expected. The Summer Set isn’t trying for greatness, just a good time. What, you’re too old for that sort of thing?
