Auditorium Theatre

Neighborhood: South Loop
50 E. Congress Pkwy.

Chicago, IL 60605
312-922-2110
Often cited as America's most beautiful theater, the Auditorium, erected in 1889, is Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan's masterpiece, a marvel of arches and ornament. The host of Mary Garden's opera company and the finest musical talents of the early 20th Century, it fell into disuse (even operating as a bowling alley during World War II) until its renovation in 1967, at which time the Auditorium Theatre Council was formed. The building now belongs to Roosevelt University. Since its near demise, it has been the palatial scene of classical music and dance concerts, as well as of blockbuster musicals presented by the Auditorium Theatre Council, including "Les Miserables," "The Phantom of the Opera," Harold Prince's Broadway revival of the 1927 Kern-Hammerstein masterpiece "Show Boat" and the Irish spectacle "Riverdance." Seats, acoustics and sight lines are excellent.
