Why you should care: American bands don’t get enough credit for pushing the limits of retro-inspired sonic clashing and VHS or Beta are actually doing it right. Their live show doesn’t disappoint, either.
Verdict: “Bring on the Comets” is progressive without being gimmicky. While groups like the Bravery seem to be retro for retro’s sake, VHS or Beta deliver that real '80s feel without sounding contrived. The synth bridges and pop choruses on songs like “Take It or Leave It” and “We Could Be One” create breezy electro-rock, but Craig Pfunder’s lyrics keep the songs firmly rooted in the modern world. The result is refreshingly light music for serious music lovers.
X-Factor: “Bring on the Comets” is full of astrological symbolism, including the interlude “Alpha Theta," which is not a tribute to the coed fraternity of the same name at Dartmouth.
