Why you should care: Tashian and Lehning's talents complement each other perfectly. Lehning’s breezy country-rock arrangements, which draw heavily from the ’70s AM radio sound of artists like Billy Joel and Jackson Browne, are the ideal backdrop for Tashian’s bittersweet ditties about unattainable girls (“Ms. November,” “Imaginary Girl”), lovable losers (“Hard Luck Tom”) and failing relationships (“Dream of Love,” “Catch Yer Own Train”).
Verdict: From its opening, “Jackie Wilson Said” burst of acoustic guitar, piano and galloping drums, to the final, melancholy notes of “The Broadway Lights,” you won’t hear a better album all year. Tashian and Lehning are master craftsmen with a very deep toolbox, capable of steering from alt-country rave-ups (“Catch Yer Own Train”) to Brian Wilson chamber-pop (“Tativille”) to Ben Folds–style jazzy balladry (“We’ll Go Walking”) without missing a beat.
X-Factor: Tashian claims that much of the inspiration for “High Society” came from classic sitcom theme songs of the ‘70s like “Laverne and Shirley” and “The Odd Couple.” “'The Odd Couple’ theme is the perfect form of music for me because it's minor chords, but it's not sad,” Tashian says.
