Petrillo Music Shell

The amphitheater area, bounded by Columbus Drive on the west, Lake Shore Drive on the east, Monroe Drive on the north and Jackson Blvd. on the south, is a popular place for free, high-quality entertainment. Throughout the summer the Grant Park Music Festival sponsors free evening concerts with the Chicago skyline as a stunning backdrop. Other music events include Latin, blues, jazz, country and gospel festivals. Classical and pop shows are also scheduled. An Independence Day-eve concert coordinated with a fireworks display is a tradition on July 3.
The music shell is named for James Petrillo, who championed the cause of free concerts in Grant Park both as president of the Chicago Federation of Musicians (1922-62) and as commissioner of the Chicago Park District (1934-45).
