Formerly known as The Chicago Historical Society, the renamed and renovated Chicago History Museum reopened to the public on Sept. 30, 2006. After an extensive $27.5-million renovation, the museum features 16,000 square feet of new and updated galleries, including a new children's gallery, a new costume gallery, a redesigned lobby and more than 1,000 artifacts and documents. Lectures, tours, panel discussions, a concert series and holiday parties also are part of the History Museum's programs.
Permanent exhibits include "Chicago: Crossroads of America," featuring five themed galleries covering various aspects of Chicago life, and the "Sensing Chicago" kids' exhibit, which allows youth to use their five senses to explore Chicago's past. Kids can smell the Great Chicago Fire, hear a Southside jazz band, touch obsolete objects from Chicago's early days and more.
