The U-505 German submarine--on display since 1954--is the only remaining submarine of its type and a National Historic Landmark. An underground, climate-controlled exhibit includes veteran testimonials, interactive replicas and re-enactments. Onboard tours available for $6.

While some attractions at this museum veer away from its ostensive mission--to advance science and technology education--most recent exhibits use the latest in exhibitry to explain important and up-to-date subjects: "Take Flight" details modern aeronautics inside a real Boeing 727 hanging from the balcony.

With more than 1,400 feet of track and 34 operating trains, the Great Train Story depicts the railroad's journey between Chicago and Seattle. The exhibit includes a miniature Sears Tower and Chicago River drawbridges.

The Omnimax Theatre, with its domed, five-story screen and booming sound system, is also a popular attraction.
