Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Geoff (the critic): So let’s see if we can get to the bottom of this enigma that is Tyler Perry. The thing that I find so intriguing is that he’s obviously filling a void in Hollywood entertainment. It seems pretty clear that he does that by having his finger on the pulse of what a large segment of the black American audience wants to see.
I don’t believe anyone else could’ve or would’ve written “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” And even if someone did, they wouldn’t have conceived a character like Madea—the big, boisterous, pistol-packing caricature played by Perry himself in outrageous drag.
I really enjoyed Kimberly Elise’s sensitive lead performance in this movie, but to me it felt like she and Madea weren’t even living on the same planet. Why do you think so many people loved the character anyway?
