Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Rochelle (the fan): One thing Tyler Perry does very well is take issues and put them under a magnifying glass in a way that other directors haven’t or won't. He's revolutionary in the way he identifies stories that haven’t been seen world wide, or even in the black community. That unique perspective makes his movies refreshing, and more fun to watch.
There’s also a different sort of romance in his films. His characters need to find a way to love themselves first because he understands that you have to love yourself before you can love somebody else.
When Elise is abandoned by her husband, she has to struggle to find her center when her center has always been him. Madea is the person who helps her get there and also the character who keeps the drama light and funny. She’s extreme but she can get away with it because she’s bringing comic relief to these heavy situations. Above all she's fiercely protective of her family, I think people can relate to that.
