Why Did I Get Married?
Geoff: I think you’re right that he’s not trying to please anyone with his movies except for his fans, but I wonder if he ever craves critical respect even a little bit.
“Married” didn’t entirely work for me, but it had his most focused narrative and some of his sharpest filmmaking choices yet. I’m hoping to see him continue to grow as a director as he gets more movies under his belt.
I thought Jill Scott was great in the film but I’m really curious to see what he’ll do with Oscar nominee Angela Basset in “Meet the Browns” and Oscar winners Kathy Bates and Jennifer Hudson in the project he’s working on right now. Honestly, I think it’s only a matter of time before one of Perry’s movies surprises people and gets good reviews, and part of that is because he keeps working with better and better actors.
