My comment is directed at ajhil, how can you say that anime is, "merely a Japanese variant of the Hanna/Barbera slop"? Have you any modern anime? I am not talking about anime from the time of Speed Racer (the animation of that era was terrible). Modern anime is leaps and bounds ahead of that. Your description of "a relatively small group of wierdo fans" is also completely inacurate. Anime fans, in the USA alone number in the millions. During it's prime time of running Dragon Ball Z was the most watched show on television. Naruto brings in similar ratings. Animation is a very expensive process, which is while you will see that the longer running animes cut a few corners and save the spectacular animation for big scenes. Shorter animes don't suffer from the same probelm. If you want to see the quality of current anime animation then I recommend the anime, The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Watch that and see if your current opinion stands.

I had begun to hope that the art of animation had finally recovered from the blight of cheap minimalism introduced by Hanna/Barbera. Their witless, primitive crap dominated television cartoons for decades and robbed more than one generation of the masterful creations that Disney, Warner, and other studios had produced. Then came anime, which is merely a Japanese variant of the Hanna/Barbera slop, but so far it seems to be confined to a relatively small group of wierdo fans. I hope Lucas and Co. aren't going to turn the clock back again. Anyone who wants to see what good modern animation looks like should check out the TV series, Jane and the Dragon. Good characters & voicing, charming plots very suitable for kids, and great artwork. The pastel pencil style is reminiscent of many of the best childrens' books; but the animation will hold your interest longest. Just watching the extraordinary detail and the background action is worth your while.
