Tender moments: The agents ring in the year 2000 with a deep kiss that lasts a little longer than “just friends” and, as Scully notes, “the world didn’t end.”

On the subject of children: Scully goes on an unusual trip with the Cigarette Smoking Man who does something funky to her. That leads to a season finale in which—surprise!—Scully’s pregnant. Unfortunately, Mulder’s not there to share the news, having been abducted by aliens dispatched to Earth by David Duchovny’s desire to work less on the series.
