The apology: "My Best Friend's Wedding"

Why apologize?: A winning, bubbly turn as a hooker with a heart of gold in “Pretty Woman” made Julia Roberts a star. When she tried to stretch with Robert Altman’s ensemble piece “Ready to Wear,” screwball action-comedy “I Love Trouble,” and glum period piece “Mary Reilly,” fans stayed away in droves.
Did it work?: A win-win for artist and audiences alike, “Wedding” allowed Roberts to play an unusually complicated leading lady but still delivered the romantic comedy goods. The film’s $126 million gross surprisingly dwarfed the cumulative total of its more heavily hyped box-office competitor (which happened to be…“Batman & Robin”).
