"The Day After Tomorrow" (2003)
What goes wrong: The melting global ice caps disrupt the ocean currents, causing weather to go berserk and usher in a new ice age.
Who the movie blames: Global warming doubters, personified by a vice president who did nothing to stop climate change because saving the world was bad for business.
The real disaster: Yet another world-ending scenario takes a back seat to a touchy-feely story of father-son bonding. Knowing that director Roland Emmerich ("Godzilla") expects such sappy and uninteresting people as Dennis Quaid’s Jack Hall and his self-absorbed son (Jake Gyllenhaal) to survive the near destruction of human civilization is enough to make you cheer on the weather.
