“Dawn of the Dead” (2004)

Another scary-movie remake that delivers shocks of its own, this revisiting of George A. Romero’s zombie movie landmark respects the original’s balance of jarring gore and wicked satire (the concept of the undead wandering around a shopping mall like mentally vacant consumerists). Director Zack Snyder’s vision possesses a restless, distinctly modern energy of its own, and the casting of delicate indie queen Sarah Polley as a besieged-mortal-turned- zombie-killer is simply brilliant.
