“The Thing” (1982)

When unpretentious genre specialist John Carpenter dusted off the 1951 sci-fi flick “The Thing from Another World,” he increased the close-quarters tension by making the alien who invades a remote arctic research facility a shape-shifter capable of taking human form. As true sci-fi nerds can attest, Carpenter’s paranoia-soaked remake was translated yet again in “The X-Files” episode “Ice.”
