Washington reunited with Spike Lee for the first time since 1992’s “Malcolm X” and the result was some of their best work: a raw warts-and-all ode to basketball that ultimately emerges as a powerful father-son drama. It also offers Washington one of his most morally complicated roles, as a convict prone to violent rages who also has a deep desire to be a good father and role model to his son.
