"Glory" (1989)

Two years after his first Oscar nomination, Washington took home a statuette for his role as an escaped slave turned Civil War officer in this acclaimed drama. The film might have been even better if Washington, or co-star Morgan Freeman, was the central character, but it’s still Washington’s spirited battles with a white Colonel (Matthew Broderick) that truly drive the film.
