The first time audiences had an opportunity to see Washington carry a film by himself was this lightweight Jamaican detective story. Roger Ebert described Denzel’s star turn as “one of those roles that creates a movie star overnight.” The flick wasn’t quite successful enough to accomplish that, but it remains a fine showcase for an actor with effortless charm.
