Brando was already considered one of the Hollywood greats when Francis Ford Coppola pushed a reluctant Paramount Pictures for the right to cast the famously-difficult actor in “The Godfather.” Brando went on to win an Oscar for his turn as the dying mafia kingpin, slicking back a thin layer of graying hair, allowing his face to sag and droop, and initially using cotton balls to puff out his cheeks as he issued death orders in a soft, fading, solemn voice.
