Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Aviator"

DiCaprio doesn’t look a thing like a young—much less old—Howard Hughes. Yet in “The Aviator,” he carries himself as the ambitious yet doomed Hughes must have—full of fire and gusto and whimsy. In the beginning of Martin Scorsese’s film, DiCaprio is limber and charismatic, turning on the charm with both the women and business partners. Unlike Brando’s physical transformation in “The Godfather,” DiCaprio’s evolution as Hughes is more psychological. He dons a mustache and fedora but does far more with his words and body language to suggest a shattered, fractured mind that’s slowly starting to break down.
