“AI: Artificial Intelligence” (2001)

Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of a project that originated with Stanley Kubrick reveals its apocalyptic study only in the third act. That’s when a race of stick-thin androids examine a decimated Earth and find David (Haley Joel Osment), a robotic child programmed to yearn for a human mother.
In an experiment almost as perverse as Spielberg’s own, they create for David the simulation of one last night spent with his adoptive mother. The ambiguous ending is debated on movie-geek message boards to this very day.
