Philip Seymour Hoffman won best male lead for his turn as a slightly exasperated playwright in "The Savages." Hoffman was feted more than once during the Spirit awards ceremony. He was referenced constantly in presenters' jokes and, at the end of the evening, was tackled by host Rainn Wilson as the credits rolled.
