The South Shore Cultural Center (SSCC) is positively assertive in fulfilling its mission statement which reads, in part, to "become one of Chicago's premier cultural institutions providing a wide variety of cultural programs, professional performances, exhibits and arts-oriented educational and leisure activities for the community." The SSCC reaches out to kids as well as adults. "Park Kids!" is the name of a program offered at the SSCC that offers recreation, cultural programs and homework assistance. Plays are also staged within the complex. MPAACT African Centered Theatre presents low-priced plays in the summer. The SSCC is also known for classes of great value and variety, including piano playing, voice instruction and acting. Dance classes focusing on adult African dance, ballroom dancing and steppin' are also offered. Other feature classes: yoga, jewelry making, Wiggleworms, children's piano and introduction to karate and self-defense. There are many events at the SSCC not related to the classes, such as a Western horse and game festival, a family festival of the arts, a children's art exhibit and a pre-Kwanzaa celebration.
