Two 40-foot long elements within a shallow rectangular pond compose this abstract fountain. Water flows down the V-shaped shaft and over its regular horizontal grooves; water spills from the deep crevice carved along the upper surface of the horizontal cylinder like a waterfall. The sculptor, Isamu Noguchi (1904-88), indicated that these abstract shapes are transcriptions of nature, with the vertical section like a tree through which water rises and the horizontal "log" an underground water source. The fountain was erected in 1976 for the U.S. Bicentennial.
