The main galleries of the library are just off the new library building's dramatic ninth floor Winter Garden, one of the great atrium spaces in Chicago. Handsome exhibit spaces are devoted, in one case, to the Harold Washington mayoral years (1983-87) in Chicago, and in another to the library's substantial collection of Civil War artifacts. Also on the ninth floor and on the ground floor are additional exhibit spaces for books, manuscripts, art and other pieces from the library's many distinguished collections, rotating with traveling exhibits from other institutions. Local history, literature and photography are particular interests of this exhibit program, which is designed to reveal just the tip of the iceberg of one of the nation's great municipal libraries.
