When the dominant structures of cultural power overwhelm, allowing full subjectivity only for some, the expression of one’s identity—including race, gender, ethnicity, and class—is often possible only through art. By appropriating and re-purposing those dominant markers and ideologies, art can remind us that nothing is as fixed as we might like to believe.
