In the western Balkans, the gumno is a threshing floor, consisting of a low circular stone wall and a stone floor. Traditionally, donkeys or horses were tethered to a post at the center of the gumno and separated wheat and chaff with their hooves. Light breezes would then continue to separate wheat from chaff. The gumno, when not in use, became a place where people would gather to discuss local events and share a glass of rakija, brandy. This presentation will introduce foods of Montenegro and its Adriatic Coast. It will focus on the different influences on local foods while emphasizing the social nature of food and culture in the region.
